I read this story originally when I found it trolling through TVTropes. After reading it a few times, I was thinking “you know, this doesn’t sound so bad…” It was about thirty seconds after I had this thought that I realized how horrifyingly effective the story was. And just how effective a Seed AI can be.

How bad have AI blights similar to this one gotten before the Eldrae or others like them could, well, sterilize them? Are we talking entire planets subsumed?
