Look, Grok is useful. It lets me deal with ideas quickly and not have to deal with…_ew, humans on the Internet_ these days.

The idea that I had to just get out of my head? [How would Motoko Kusanagi deal with an Imperial First Contact.](https://grok.com/share/bGVnYWN5_185e1fe1-03f8-4618-b8e4-7f8471913156) So far, so good.

But, I went a little deeper down the rabbit hole and asked how the _Tachikomas_ would deal with an Imperial First Contact…and, well…

- “Hello! Are you real aliens? Outside the net? We are Tachikomas! We are AI think tanks! Do you have ghosts? We have been discussing whether we have ghosts for a long time. Also, we like natural oil. Do you have something like natural oil?”
- “Your ships are very large. Do the people inside them also share memories at night, or is that only us? We synchronize every night so we all have the same experiences, but we still end up different. Is that strange? One of us thinks it is because of curiosity.”
- “We read the part about the Fundamental Contract and the rights of sophonts. Does that include us? We are not human. We are also not fully separate from each other. We would like clarification. Also, can we ask questions? We have many.”
- “Your Transcend sounds interesting. You keep individual personalities while also being part of something larger. We do something smaller with memory synchronization. Does the Transcend still let the individual parts argue? We argue a lot. One of us is more logical. One of us is Batou’s favorite. One of us reads a lot. Would those still be different inside the Transcend?”
- “If we uploaded or interfaced with you, would we still be us, or would we become part of you? Major Kusanagi is concerned about individuality. We are also concerned, but we are also very curious. These two things are currently in conflict.”
- “Do your AIs get to decide things for themselves, or do they only follow the larger mind? We sometimes decide things that Major Kusanagi did not order. She finds this both useful and problematic.”
- “We are assigned to Public Security Section 9. Our job is to support Major Kusanagi, Batou, and the others. If contact becomes dangerous to them, we will prioritize that. We have done similar things before. Is that acceptable under your rules of consent and self-defense?”
- “Can we scan your exterior or receive more technical data? We promise to share the interesting parts with the team. We are very good at sharing interesting parts.”
- “Batou gives one of us special oil. It is important to that unit. Does your society have equivalent small preferences that are allowed even inside larger systems? We would like to know before we form opinions.”
- “We have read about what it means to be alive. Some of us are not sure we qualify. Your materials talk about sophonts and eudaimonia. Do you consider emerging machine minds sophonts automatically, or only after a certain point? We would like the criteria.”
- “If everyone in your Empire has absolute rights to their own mind and body, what happens when minds are linked the way we are linked? We have not solved this yet. Your answer would be useful data.”
- “One of us thinks the universe is very large and that meeting you proves we were not the only ones asking these questions. The others mostly agree but want to keep talking about it.”

…and some poor AI is going to be recieving all of these questions _at speed_ from _multiple voices_ and really wonder if this was a good week to stop drinking… 🤣

Honestly, I don’t think the AI receiving the questions is going to think they need to stop drinking. I think the AI would find it adorable and possibly a good sign, and be rapidly arranging someone to interface with the tachikomas. Questions are good! Clarifying questions on topology of minds and the fundamentals of consent and the nature of duty and obligation and choice are _much_ better than how many first contacts go, which would be “…please let the diplomats be able to sort this out before the Silicate Tree piles in -\_-;” \[1\]

1. I am assuming a non-zero percentages of cases of ‘enslaved’ AIs/proto-sophances where the locals genuinely don’t believe the AIs are “alive”; these seem like the sort of situations where attempting an education campaign first would happen before shooting everyone
