Over the Top Media: Annoying, or Epic?

How well does completely over the top, “nobody can take this seriously”, utterly implausible media play in the Empire of the Star? Does it annoy the highly science literate audience who wants their stuff to at least pay lip service to reality, or is it fine as long as it is done for the purpose of awesome or epic or utterly hilarious?

I am thinking action movies in the style of some Bollywood films, like Baahubali 2’s “palm tree catapult flying shield formation of doom”.

Is it bad that my biggest problem with that clip is Oi, you’ve just ruined my bit of rope. That was a good bit of rope, that. You twonk! What did you just do that for?

I suspect this sort of media would be appreciated for the visual and auditory aspects, and for the absurdist humour, and not for the storytelling. Maybe a bit like how opera is singing leavened with a bit of plot, these sorts of films would be appreciated as cool visuals (and cool audio) that’s leavened with a bit of plot.

Besides - don’t Imperials like surrealism and absurdity?
