Plumbing the Depths (2)

The

DEEP STAR PROGRAM

WANTS YOU

To Make A New Life Around A New Star!

Following the successful launches of our first three interstellar colony ships, we are preparing two more for launch in 3036, and we are still recruiting both colonists and crew for Destiny Ascendant.

Destiny Ascendant is bound for the fourth planet of the star Affíëshíël Corse, 33 light-orbits away, which has been extensively studied by researchers from the Garden Planet Finder to the Deep Orbit Oculus. Affíëshíël Corse IV is a gleaming blue jewel, a life-bearing ocean world whose seas cover almost 96% of its surface. For full details of the planet and what you can expect on arrival, see here.

We believe that this is a wonderful opportunity for would-be colonists with a pioneering spirit and a love of the sea. While the type of land grants made available in our previous colonial ventures won't be available for obvious reasons, your contributions to the colonial corporation can instead be paid out in prefab house-boats and both maritime and undersea colonization equipment for oceansteading. Please see here for full details.

We are also seeking crewers to complete the ship's complement and initial colony staff. Those accepted as crewers and/or staffers will receive over-market salaries (subject to contract) for the period up to launch of Destiny Ascendant, and upon arrival, will receive a minimum of a single and a maximum of four colony-shares, which can be paid out as normal contributions. Those who staff the colony after arrival will receive salaries for such work subject to the colony's own economic arrangements. For more information on available positions, see here.

WANTED for Destiny Ascendant:

Hydrodynamics Engineer,

  1. During flight, reporting to Closed-Ecology Life Support Systems Manager;
  2. Post-arrival, assuming duties to colonial infrastructure.

Requirements:

  • Waterwright and/or hydrodynamicist master's certification from metareviewer-certified guild.
  • S-license and minimum level 6 space competence certificate.
  • Minimum 1 dodecade experience.
  • Peer references and previous project sign-offs as requested.

As a crewer, while the majority of the cruise transit time (est. 108 years) will be spent in cryostasis, one year's wakeful transit in three-person shifts is required.

Compensation: Market+20 pre-launch; 2 colony shares on arrival.

Contact: office of Kasjan Lyris, Deep Star Program, c/o Skystream Station, Talentar High Orbit.

Is Affíëshíël Corse IV going to be later named Phílae?

Yep!

Not much of a secret, really, given that water coverage… but, of course, they haven’t named it yet. Inhabitant’s privilege, and all.

As a side note, while not exactly Heinlein computing out an orbit relevant to one scene in Space Cadet out by hand on butcher paper, or Niven & Pournelle rewriting the entire planetography of New Scotland to preserve a good line, I will note for the record that I went to the trouble to dig up my notes on Eliéran astrology and sketches of approximate relative positions of the stars of the Core just so I could give Phílae’s star its correct astronomical name.

(Never let it be said I skimp on the details.)

Bonus note: Affíëshíël is the constellation of “the Dancer”.
