I do seem to recall that one of the reasons for the Eldrae originally devising a way to transfer their immortality to others was for the sake of their Bandal companions? What was their lifespan like before that point?

Not all that different - about 15-17 years on average, with the side note that the shorter lifespan of large breeds didn’t happen there because of the genetic admixture from Canis dirus. Or - well, technically the branch in the canine tree took place before C. dirus (-125 ky - -9.5 ky) was around, since they postdate the Precursors, but at the time the genes were still around in the general canine stock.
They managed to progressively stretch that about fivefold through careful breeding, excellent healthcare, and anagathics of varying degrees of advancement - which sounds impressive but still sucked - before a true immortagen was developed.
